Description

The aim of this session is to provide a short introduction to the main methods of dose reduction used in radiation protection.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify how time, distance and shielding can be used to reduce your radiation dose
• Quantify the dose reduction achieved by increasing distance from the source of radiation using the inverse square law
• Gain some knowledge of the principles of room design
• Identify when to use personal protective equipment and when it should be used for patients

Elizabeth Davies works in Radiation Protection at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. She is currently working towards Radiation Protection Adviser and Medical Physics Expert status having recently obtained Radioactive Waste Adviser status.

As part of her role in Radiation Protection, she helps to provide advice on the safe use of radiation throughout Leicestershire.

She is an active STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Ambassador and as part of this goes into schools to raise the profile of Medical Physics as a career. She also organises and presents on Radiation Protection Supervisor courses.
