Description

This session is designed to help you accurately interpret the imaging appearances of a popliteal fossa mass. Other, less common masses are also explored.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Review the anatomy of the popliteal fossa
• Explain the most appropriate imaging modalities for investigating a knee mass
• Formulate a differential diagnosis for a popliteal fossa mass
• Recognise the most common popliteal fossa mass, a popliteal cyst (also known as a Baker's cyst)
• Identify the causes of the rarer masses found around the knee, in particular, soft tissue sarcoma, and recognise when referral to a specialist centre is required
• Recognise when a lesion may be malignant, either arising from the bone or soft tissues, and understand how to further manage these patients
