Description

This session will describe and explore how children develop from birth to the end of adolescence and how this impacts on considerations for communication before, during and after their diagnostic imaging procedures.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe how children and young people develop from birth to the end of adolescence
• Identify how different developmental stages may influence children and young people’s behaviour
• Identify and link relevant theoretical perspectives to your practice
• Apply developmental considerations to communication strategies that can be used before, during and after imaging procedures

Alison Tonkin -
Teacher and Manager, Stanmore College

Alison is a dual trained radiographer who has also worked with children and young people across the age range as a preschool practitioner and a 6th form tutor and lecturer for a number of years. Alison has also undertaken research into the role of internal body knowledge for pre-school children and the link to subsequent health promotion.

Alison currently teaches on and manages the Higher Education provision within Stanmore College, covering ‘Working with children and young people’ and ‘Healthcare Play Specialism’ foundation degree programmes as well as the BA (Hons) top up in ‘Working in integrated services for children and young people’


Claire Weldon -
Teacher, Stanmore College

Claire qualified as a primary school teacher in 2001 and as a hospital play specialist (HPS) in 2003. She is currently teaching a range of child care and health and social care courses at Stanmore College.

Claire is married to a radiographer and her interest in working with children in education and healthcare has recently developed to include linking these two areas of practice together. Claire has recently written a number of articles promoting the need for age and developmental stage awareness within the imaging process, and how this can be applied within practice.
