Description

This session considers the role of ultrasound in investigating obstetric conditions and discusses its value alongside other imaging modalities. Tips on equipment use, technique, orientation and reporting will be offered.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe common reasons for referral for obstetric ultrasound
• Recognise the role of ultrasound in relation to other imaging modalities for assessing the pregnant uterus
• Identify the equipment and controls required for safe, high quality ultrasound imaging of the pregnant uterus
• Describe the principles and techniques required for systematic evaluation of the pregnant uterus
• Identify principles and techniques for optimum care of the pregnant woman
• Describe the limitations and pitfalls of ultrasound imaging of the pregnant uterus

Regina Fernando qualified as a diagnostic radiographer in 1975 and specialised in ultrasound in 1981. Previous posts include superintendent sonographer at the Whittington Hospital, London, principal lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire where she coordinated the Masters programme in Diagnostic Ultrasound, and part-time lecturer on the MSc Medical Ultrasound course at King’s College, London. Currently, she works for the Royal Free Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Regina was project lead for the initial development of Occupational Standards for Diagnostic Ultrasound in 1998 and was a member of the Society and College of Radiographers Ultrasound Advisory Group. She is enthusiastic about evolving clinical practice in ultrasound and anticipates that the Image Interpretation sessions may offer a valuable source of CPD to healthcare practitioners using ultrasound.
