Description

This session considers the serum biochemistry involved in early pregnancy and the biochemical markers used in screening in the first and second trimester. It will include findings at different gestational ages and describe the necessary information required for first and second trimester biochemical testing.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify the hormones relevant to early pregnancy
• Identify serum biochemistry used for screening in the first and second trimester and the factors affecting such screening
• Recognise the ultrasound images relating to biochemistry results at the varying stages of early pregnancy, first and second trimester

Karen qualified as a midwife in 1995 and implemented the screening coordinator’s role at Southend Hospital, which she held for 2 years. After completing this secondment she worked at the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a fetal medicine midwifery sister/sonographer.

She gained a PGCert in obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound in 2000 and developed her skills further in 2005 by qualifying in general ultrasound. She has worked in the independent sector at the Portland Hospital, London and with Hitachi as an applications specialist. Currently, Karen is a senior sonographer at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.
