Description

This session will cover the routine fetal anomaly scan which is performed between 18+0 weeks and 20+6 weeks gestation. The fetal anatomy examined during the scan will be described with the aid of ultrasound images and line drawings.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Discuss briefly why the anomaly scan is undertaken and why it is performed between 18+0 - 20+6 weeks gestation
• Describe the areas which should be examined and the measurements recorded
• Explain how to obtain the cross-sectional views where images should be recorded
• Label relevant anatomical and ultrasound landmarks on cross-sectional images
• Discuss the implications of finding a normal variant

David Cole

David has been a practising obstetric sonographer for almost thirty years. He moved from clinical radiography into teaching in 1982 and at the same time studied for the College of Radiographers Diploma in Medical Ultrasound. He has been the programme leader for Medical Ultrasound courses in the West Midlands since 1985. During this time David has maintained his clinical skills by working part-time for various hospitals in the West Midlands and also as an agency sonographer.

David is a member of the College of Radiographers Ultrasound Advisory Group, and is also an External Examiner for Medical Ultrasound courses at two Universities in the United Kingdom.
