Description

This session will focus upon the fetal heart and chest. Anatomy and physiology will be discussed alongside ultrasound imaging technique and the presentation of common pathologies which can be detected antenatally.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify and understand the anatomy of the fetal heart and circulation
• Recognise normal ultrasound images of the fetal heart and chest
• Describe common pathologies of the fetal heart and chest
• Compare your reporting style with our suggested style

Sophie Bale -
Fetal Cardiac Sonographer, University Hospitals Bristol NHS Trust

Sophie is a midwife sonographer with a specialism in fetal echocardiography. She has recently completed her MSc in Medical Ultrasound and during this time worked as a fetal cardiac sonographer within a regional fetal cardiology service. This role involved undertaking fetal echocardiograms on those women at risk of developing fetal congenital heart disease and also involvement in the diagnosis of cardiac conditions detected at the routine fetal anomaly scan.

Sophie has also worked with the Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme (FASP) as a national projects midwife where her role involved development of a national fetal cardiac pathway and involvement in national and regional fetal cardiac screening training strategies and practical application. Sophie has enjoyed these varied roles and has been delighted to take part in the e-learning for health initiative.


Allison Harris -
Lecturer and Clinical Coordinator, Ultrasound Programme, City University of London

Allison qualified as a radiographer in 1980. She qualified with the DMU in 1984 and has worked in many Hospitals across London and the South East. She has been involved in teaching student sonographers as a Clinical Supervisor since 1995. Whilst working clinically she undertook a visiting lecturer role for the Ultrasound Programme at City University moderating the final clinical assessments and Viva’s for the students.

Since 2009, she has been a lecturer and the clinical coordinator for the Ultrasound Programme at City, University of London. She still works clinically as a sonographer in hospitals across London and Essex.
