Description

This session considers the use of Doppler ultrasound to investigate and monitor those pregnancies at risk of perinatal morbidity and mortality due to utero-placental insufficiency.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Outline the main applications of Doppler ultrasound in obstetrics
• Explain the principles underlying the Doppler technique
• Describe the utero-placental and feto-placental anatomy
• Discuss the Doppler ultrasound techniques for examining the utero-placental, feto-placental and fetal circulations
• Give examples of spectral Doppler waveforms and discuss their clinical implications

David Cole

David has been a practising obstetric sonographer for almost thirty years. He moved from clinical radiography into teaching in 1982 and at the same time studied for the College of Radiographers Diploma in Medical Ultrasound. He has been the programme leader for Medical Ultrasound courses in the West Midlands since 1985. During this time David has maintained his clinical skills by working part-time for various hospitals in the West Midlands and also as an agency sonographer.

David is a member of the College of Radiographers Ultrasound Advisory Group, and is also an External Examiner for Medical Ultrasound courses at two Universities in the United Kingdom.
