Description

This session considers the sonographic appearances of multiple pregnancy. It will include an overview of normal appearances, determining amnionicity and chorionicity and common pathology. It will also discuss common pitfalls to avoid. Tips on reporting will be offered.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify a multiple pregnancy
• Outline the methodology for determining chorionicity and amnionicity
• Recognise common pathological processes
• Describe the limitations and pitfalls of ultrasound imaging of multiple pregnancy

Jane Arezina -
Medical Ultrasound Programme Manager, University of Leeds

Jane has over 20 years ultrasound experience in clinical practice and has been involved in education for several years. She is currently a lecturer and leader for the Obstetric Ultrasound module as part of the Diagnostic Imaging programme at the University of Leeds.

Jane joined the University in 2006 as an ultrasound lecturer and completed her University of Leeds Teaching Accreditation (2) qualification to become a fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2009. She teaches on a wide range of the postgraduate and undergraduate imaging modules within the School of Healthcare and faculty of Medicine and Health.

In 2009, she became the Medical Ultrasound programme manager and led the development and successful validation of the Diagnostic Imaging programme, which was formed by the merger of the Breast Imaging and Medical Ultrasound programmes.
Jane has contributed to research, including two commercially funded research projects into bottle and breast-feeding using ultrasound. In addition, she is interested in student education and presented at the first University of Leeds Student Education Conference in January 2012. In addition, she was an invited speaker to the Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education training day in December 2012.

As safe and effective ultrasound practice is essential to ensure patient safety, the increased provision of online learning tools should encourage increased understanding of the role of ultrasound in clinical practice.


Alison McGuiness -
Consultant Sonographer, Mid Yorkshire Hospital NHS Trust

Alison has over 20 years ultrasound experience in clinical practice and has been involved in clinical practice and education for many years. She is currently a consultant sonographer at Mid Yorkshire Hospital NHS Trust and guest lecturer for several Higher Education Institutes.

Alison is an external examiner, peer reviewer for professional journals and book publishers and member of the BMUS Science and Education Committee.

As an experienced clinical mentor and assessor of ultrasound practitioners from a range of different professional backgrounds, Alison feels that the availability of online learning for a wide range of healthcare professionals is imperative to help to develop safe and effective ultrasound practice.
