Description

This session will review the procedures where ultrasound is used to guide intervention for both treatment and diagnostic purposes. It will discuss in greater detail two of the more commonly performed procedures (amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling). The reasons for performing these procedures will be explored, together with the role of the sonographer in the process.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• List the interventional procedures which can be performed under ultrasound guidance
• Recognise which patients should be recommended to undergo a chorionic villus sampling procedure or an amniocentesis
• Describe how the procedure is performed, and the role of the sonographer in the process
• List the risks and benefits of these procedures
