Dorothy Keane
on behalf of Health Education England

Dorothy Keane qualified as a diagnostic radiographer in 1979. After spending 15 years as a paediatric radiographer in Manchester, she returned to South Tyneside in 1995 and worked as a reporting radiographer from 2000. Dorothy was a consultant radiographer with expertise in the interpretation of plain radiographic images of the skeleton from 2003 to 2014.

Dorothy developed a system of written image interpretation by radiographers, which was introduced in 2002. This replaced the red dot system and dramatically reduced the rate of missed fractures in the emergency department.

Dorothy is committed to the education of radiographers, nurses, allied health professionals and doctors in image interpretation. She is also dedicated to working with these health professionals to improve patient pathways and enhance patient care.

In June 2011 Dorothy was elected to Fellowship of the College of Radiographers in view of her outstanding contribution to the science and practice of radiography and in recognition of service to the College.

Dorothy currently works as a Professional Officer for the College of Radiographers in her role as Clinical Lead and Editor of the Image Interpretation e-learning project.
