Description

This session introduces the various aspects of neurointervention, including the specialised radiology equipment, the pathology imaged and interventional treatments carried out. Also included are the topics of subarachnoid haemorrhage and the research supporting practice.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the patient mix in neurointervention
• Briefly describe the type of specialised radiology equipment required
• Label the vessels comprising the Circle of Willis
• List the types of pathology treated and medical devices used for neuro intervention
• Outline the tests involved and the pathway for patients presenting with acute subarachnoid haemorrhage

Consultant Radiographer, Department of Neuroradiology, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne

Nicola qualified as a diagnostic radiographer in 1985 and was appointed to the first consultant diagnostic radiography post in the UK in 2003, specialising in neurointervention. She continues to develop the care pathway for this specialty. She is an honorary lecturer for the University of Teesside and contributes to a number of educational programmes. Nicola is a Trustee of the Northern Brainwave Appeal.
