Description

This session will introduce the basic neurovascular anatomy of the head and neck originating from and ending at the aortic arch, including the arteries and veins. It will also briefly cover the areas of the brain supplied by these vessels.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify the anatomy of the aortic arch
• Identify and correctly label the carotid and vertebral vessels
• Identify and correctly label the intracranial vessels
• Recognise and identify the neurovascular venous drainage
• Briefly describe the lobes of the brain supplied by the neurovasculature
• Describe some normal variations in neurovascular anatomy

Department of Neuroradiology, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne

Samantha is currently working in neuroradiology at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne. She qualified at Leeds University in 2012. She is currently involved in multiple imaging modalities including computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, angiography and transcranial Doppler TCD). She has a particular interest in interventional radiography and TCD with regards to the monitoring and follow-up of subarachnoid haemorrhage and sickle cell patients.

Samantha is also involved in the provision of TCD for the sickle cell clinics based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
