Description

This session describes the incidence of chronic pain after various types of surgery, the possible patient-related and procedure-related risk factors for the development of chronic post-surgical pain and suggested interventions to prevent the transition from acute to chronic pain.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Define chronic post-surgical pain
• Describe the incidence of chronic post-surgical pain according to various surgical procedures
• Identify the surgical factors that may increase the incidence of chronic post-surgical pain
• Identify the patient factors that contribute to the development of chronic post-surgical pain
• Appraise the evidence for preoperative or perioperative interventions to reduce the risk of chronic post-surgical pain

Jane Quinlan
on behalf of Health Education England

Since qualifying from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in 1990, Jane trained in anaesthesia in London at St Thomas’ and Bart’s hospitals, and in Oxford.

She is now a consultant anaesthetist in Oxford, and an honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Oxford.

Jane’s professional interests include acute and inpatient pain management.

Jane is a content author and module editor for the e-PAIN project.
