Description

This session describes the antenatal screening programme for syphilis in the UK and the rationale underlying this. We will discuss national and global epidemiology of syphilis, as well as testing and treatment strategies. We will briefly examine the consequences of antenatal syphilis infection.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the epidemiology of syphilis in pregnancy and its burden in the UK and globally
• Describe the antenatal syphilis screening programme in the UK
• List the treatment options for syphilis in pregnancy
• Recognise the consequences of untreated syphilis in pregnancy
• Explain the follow-up of pregnant women treated for syphilis

Nashaba Matin and Ellen Dwyer

Nashaba Matin -
Specialist Registrar GUM/HIV, Mortimer market, London

Nashaba Matin is a GUM/HIV physician based in London. She has an interest in STIs and HIV in women and the prevention of transmission of STIs and HIV from mother to child. Nashaba is currently working in Dhaka, Bangladesh as an HIV physician and is actively involved in the clinical training of national doctors in HIV and STI management.

Nashaba is the co-author of a systematic review into effective interventions to prevent congenital syphilis. She is also trained in public health medicine and is a member of the Faculty of Public Health, UK.


Ellen Dwyer -
Locum consultant in genitourinary medicine

Dr Ellen Dwyer is a locum consultant in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine and is currently based at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. She has a specialist Interest in antenatal HIV care and the prevention of STI transmission from mother to child.
