This session describes cultural competence and its importance for health professionals working across cross-cultural situations.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the key components of a culturally competent service
• Describe what being culturally competent in your area of work means
• Explain why health professionals have a responsibility to develop an awareness of diverse cultures
• Explain the importance of self-awareness and the impact your own prejudices, beliefs, values and cultural roots have on your interactions and care of patients who are not from your own social and cultural group
• Describe the impact of making assumptions based on individuals' cultural background or behaviour in particular circumstances
• Explain what is meant by the term 'cultural safety'

Katie became a midwife in 2008 after graduating from City University. Whilst working as a practicing midwife, Katie had the opportunity to lead on a number of projects which have contributed to improving the health, care experiences and maternity care environment for women and children.

In 2014 Katie was awarded the Mary Seacole Development Award and as part of the scholarship undertook a project to explore and develop cultural competency training for midwives. Katie sought the input and experiences of women from Black Asian and Minority Ethnic communities accessing maternity services within the South East of England; as well as the midwives providing care. Recommendations from this work identified that health professionals needed greater support and training to improve their confidence, communication and skills in being able to navigate and respond to some of the cultural and religious needs of their clients.

Currently, Katie works as a Quality Improvement Lead at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and supports teams and programmes of work which contribute to improving the quality, safety and experience of care. She mentors students, nurses and midwives; and campaigns alongside charities and grass-root organisations which in particular make a difference to inequalities and outcomes.
