Description

This session describes the principles of care in the immediate and delayed postoperative period, including the commonly occurring complications as well as strategies to optimize cardiac function by using mechanical circulatory support.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the priorities for the immediate postoperative care of a heart transplant patient
• Identify the complications that commonly occur in the postoperative period after heart transplantation
• Describe the strategies to optimize the cardiac function of the transplanted heart
• Recognize the indications for different types of mechanical circulatory support after heart transplantation
• Describe the use of different types of mechanical circulatory support after heart transplantation

Stephen Pettit and Kiran Salaunkey

Stephen Pettit -
Consultant Cardiologist, Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Stephen studied Medicine at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He trained as a Cardiologist in Glasgow, Liverpool and Cambridge, before being appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at Papworth Hospital in 2014.

His special interests include a sub-specialty interest in advanced heart failure, device therapy, mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation. He works as part of a large multi-disciplinary team in the highest volume heart transplant programme in the United Kingdom.

Kiran Salaunkey -
Consultant Intensivist, Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Kiran completed his anaesthesia and intensive care training from the South Eastern school of Anaesthesia and his higher specialist training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia was obtained from Royal Brompton hospital and Papworth hospital. He is accredited in perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography by the European association of Echocardiography.

His clinical interests include anaesthesia for minimally invasive mitral surgery and for pulmonary thromboendarterectomy. He is also interested in transfer of patients from peripheral Intensive Care Units, who are on mechanical cardiorespiratory support, and renal replacement therapy on intensive care.

He is a facilitator on the perioperative transesophageal ECHO courses and focussed transthoracic ECHO courses at Papworth hospital.
