This session examines the impact that relatives can have on interactions between patients and professionals in end of life care. By the end of this session you will be able to:
Outline the impact of a patient’s terminal illness on those close to them
Identify ways in which relatives may try to control or influence interactions between a patient and a professional in end of life situations
Recognise the consequences of relatives trying to control or influence discussions between patients and professionals
Review the legal position of relatives’ rights to involvement and information in end of life patient care
Identify key communication skills required to best meet the needs of patients and relatives in situations involving challenging relatives
Apply best practice in sharing information and involving relatives in decisions about end of life care
