This session will enable understanding about the history and diversity within the role of the hospital social worker and how it contributes to good end of life care (EoLC).


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Define the role of social work developed in hospital from (Lady) Almoner to Medical Social Worker then onto the current hospital social worker and more specialised social work roles
• Recognise the role of social worker and specialist social worker in hospitals
• Identify the differences between the medical and social models of health/disability
• Describe the legislative framework encompassing hospital social work
• Detail how social workers work within the multidisciplinary team, and engage with the continuing health care and Mental Capacity Act processes

Tes Smith and Peter Southern

Tes Smith -
Tes is the Director of Quality and Care at Saint Francis Hospice, near Romford. Tes has held this role since 2015 and oversees a CQC rated Outstanding services directorate. Her previous roles have included Social Care Lead for Macmillan and the NHS National End of Life Care Programme. Her first position was as a qualified Social Worker in a multi-professional team in a hospice.

Throughout her career, her passion for high quality end of life care for all has been paramount. Key to this is effective collaborative working across Health and Social Care. Her career to date has encompassed management roles within Health including Mental Health and Social Care. She also works as an Operational Service Manager within Adult Social Care for Essex County Council.

Her interests include learning and development and she demonstrated this through her roles as a supervisor, coach, Ruskin tutor and practice teacher mentor. She is also a NLP Master Practitioner and Exec coach. She has published work on end of life care, specifically the Route to Success series when at the End of life Programme and also book chapters looking at LGBT issues and also the role of social care and social work at end of life.

Peter Southern -
Peter Southern is a Palliative Care Social Worker with the Macmillan Palliative Care Team at the Barts and the London NHS Trust, employed by the NHS Trust. He has also worked in Local Authority and Hospice settings.

He is a member of the Association of Palliative Care Social Workers, and has been on the organisations National Committee for the past six years.
