This session will help you to understand the skills required to communicate effectively with individuals and families affected by bereavement, demonstrating empathy and signposting to other services where appropriate.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe how to initiate and maintain supportive conversations with bereaved people
• Recognise and respond to a variety of different barriers to communication
• Describe some of the complexities in communicating with bereaved people who are not normally resident in the UK
• Recognise the value of signposting in referring bereaved people on to more specialised services

David McCracken
on behalf of Health Education England

David first became interested in palliative care and bereavement support when he was a social work student on placement in Hull in 1999.

After writing a dissertation on Hospice Social Work, he took up a post in 2001 as a social worker at St Barnabas Hospice in West Sussex, supporting dying patients and bereaved families. Since 2004, he has worked as a social worker with the Palliative Care Team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

His professional interests include bereavement support, bereavement risk-assessment and supporting people from ethnic minority groups who find themselves disadvantaged or alienated in coming to terms with life-threatening illnesses and bereavement.
