Description

This session considers the communication skills you will need to use in dealing with patients who have suffered, or are at risk of, FGM.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Initiate and conduct a sensitive consultation with a patient at risk of FGM
• Initiate and conduct a consultation with a patient who has undergone FGM, and discuss their attitudes and experience
• Recognise a patient at risk of FGM
• Explain the cultural justifications for why FGM is done
• Consider and address your own feelings about FGM

John Spicer and Obi Amadi

John Spicer -
John is a GP in Croydon, and Head of Primary Care Education for Health Education South London. He has been a Senior Lecturer in Medical Ethics and Law at St George’s, University of London, where he developed an interest in the ethics of FGM and related issues.

Obi Amadi -
Obi is the Lead Professional Officer at Unite the Union. She trained as a nurse, midwife and health visitor in London and has campaigned on many inequality in health issues, particularly FGM. Most recently, she was a co-editor of Tackling FGM in the UK: Intercollegiate recommendations for identifying, recording and reporting.
