This session looks at the issues of FGM during the early years, childhood and adolescence, including prevention, health promotion, care and support.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe and apply key safeguarding principles relevant to FGM to individual cases and organisational processes
• Describe the ways that FGM may present in girls
• Identify the short and long term physical and psychosocial complications of FGM
• Describe and apply the issue of FGM to a key public health model
• Explain the referral pathways to specialist services, social care and/or the police for a girl with FGM and her family or carer
• Explain when and how to use the new national FGM Risk Indication System

Betsy Allen, Sveta Alladi and Deborah Hodes

Betsy Allen -
Betsy is the Professional Lead for School Nursing for Integrated Services in Devon. She is also a qualified health visitor and has worked as a university lecturer at both The University of Plymouth and The University of the West of England. She has a Masters degree in Public Health Nursing, and is on the executive board of SAPHNA (School and Public Health Nursing Association).

Sveta Alladi -
Dr Alladi is the Clinical Lead for the e-Learning in FGM awareness project. She is also a Paediatric Trainee in Community Paediatrics in London and previously a National Medical Director Fellow in Leadership and Management at Health Education England. In addition, she has specialist interest in Public Health having completed a Masters in Public Health from Harvard University and worked with UNICEF in India.

Deborah Hodes -
Deborah has been a Consultant Community Paediatrician since 1990. She is employed by UCLH and the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. In 2014, she was appointed as Designated Doctor in Child Protection for the London Borough of Camden.

She has vast clinical experience in all aspects of child abuse and neglect and has developed a very active local and tertiary safeguarding clinic which includes the assessment of children with historic sexual abuse and more recently girls who have undergone FGM. A new joint children and young people’s clinic for those who have undergone FGM, or who are at risk, opened at UCLH in September 2014. She chairs the multi-agency Camden committee that was set up to end FGM in the borough.

She teaches both locally and nationally and increasingly on the role of the paediatrician in FGM. She has developed a safeguarding programme for senior doctors in training as well as peer review and support for doctors in London.

She contributes to work at the RCPCH as a co-opted member of the Child Protection Standing Committee. She also represents the RCPCH for working groups on FGM and in the House of Commons. She is a trustee for the charity FORWARD UK that works to eliminate the practice of FGM and provide support to affected women.
