Description

This session provides key information about complaints, the common factors leading to a complaint and focuses on how to minimise these. The session will help your understanding of the complaints procedures and your responsibilities as a foundation doctor in handling complaints.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Recognise the factors that may lead to complaints
• Explain your responsibilities as a doctor in responding to complaints
• Formulate an effective response to a complaint
• Describe the NHS complaints policy and structures in NHS Trusts
• List the local and other stages of complaints procedures

Rajesh Krishnamoorthy
on behalf of Health Education England

Dr Krishnamoorthy qualified from Coimbatore, India in 1998 and completed his Postgraduate Degree in General Medicine (MD) from Madras Medical College and Research Institute in 2002. His dissertation was on Pulmonary Manifestations of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in South India, which was awarded the best paper award in the National Conference of the Association of Physicians of India in 2002.

He continued training subsequently in the UK as a medical senior house officer in 2003 and completed MRCP in 2006. He is a specialist trainee in Gastroenterology based at Leicester. He is interested in liver disease and presented a poster about cirrhosis management in the intensive care unit at the American Association of the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) Annual meeting at Boston, Massachusetts in 2009.
