Description

This session describes various models of the general practice consultation, and details how to use each one. The session is intended to be a basis for the subsequent ‘GP consultation’ sessions. This session was reviewed by Sally Higginbottom and last updated in June 2014.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the purpose of consultation models
Describe the key features of some of the models in common use
Appraise the role of the models (and their limitations) in developing a personal ‘consulting style’
Analyse and adapt consultations through the use of consultation models

Roger Neighbour
on behalf of Health Education England

Roger Neighbour OBE DSc MA FRCGP FRCP FRACGP was a GP, trainer and VTS course organiser in Hertfordshire from 1974 to 2003. He was an MRCGP examiner for 20 years and Convenor of the Panel of Examiners 1997-2002. In 2003 Roger was elected President of the Royal College of General Practitioners for a three-year term.

He is the author of The Inner Consultation, The Inner Apprentice and I’m Too Hot Now, and of numerous papers on medical education and consulting skills. Now retired from clinical practice, Roger continues to teach about the consultation throughout the UK and worldwide.

In 2011 he was made an OBE for services to medical education.
