This session examines the concepts of equality and diversity. It considers how legislation and policy serve to ensure that people are treated fairly whether they are employees, or receiving care.


By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify what is meant by equality and diversity in the context of working in healthcare and delivering healthcare services
• Examine key pieces of legislation relevant to equality and identify the responsibilities these place on individuals and organisations
• Identify how equality and diversity considerations can influence the development and delivery of services

Tony Lewis -
Tony Lewis MA MB is a retired GP and medical academic.

He has been involved in medical education throughout his career including being Regional Advisor for General Practice for Devon and Cornwall. He was also retained to advise on the development of health services and primary care in Ghana, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Khazakstan.

As senior lecturer in General Practice, he was a key player in developing the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, and was lead for Problem Based Learning in the college.

He has a particular interest in small group work, leadership in small groups and optimising learning for all health professionals. As an appraiser for Devon PCT, he developed an interest in leadership, management and values based decisions and how health care professionals interpret these in their day to day work.

As a trained coached and member of the International Coaching Federation, Tony has coached many health professionals, especially medical practitioners. In 2005 he co-authored the book “Coaching for Effective Learning: A Practical Guide for Teachers in Healthcare”. Since retiring, Tony now works on a freelance basis providing coaching to medical and senior staff in healthcare.

Gira Patel -
Gira started working as a Mental Health Counsellor at IDL in October 2014.

Originally from Northamptonshire in the UK, Gira graduated in 1999 from Leeds University Medical School, UK, and is a qualified psychiatrist in the UK.

After completing her pre-registration internships, she worked in general and elderly care medicine in Leeds before commencing specialty medical training as a psychiatrist in London, UK.

During 10 years of training in psychiatry, she gained experience in Adult Psychiatry, Old Age Psychiatry, Perinatal Psychiatry, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, Liaison Psychiatry and Psychotherapies. She acquired her MRCPsych in 2005.

In 2007, Gira acquired a postgraduate qualification in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in London; and in 2010 a further postgraduate qualification in management for doctors from Leeds University. Gira became a consultant psychiatrist in 2012 and worked in the National Health Service in London.

She combined senior clinical responsibilities with active research interests, including a publication in the British Journal of Psychiatry and was formally recognized with an award for excellence in clinical teaching of Imperial College Medical students.

Although currently not registered with the Hong Kong Medical Council and not practicing as a psychiatrist in Hong Kong, Gira is registered with the General Medical Council (UK) and is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK).
