Description

This session focuses on the physical, emotional and social contexts of family life in the 21st century.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Describe the home environment in terms of the 'Ecological Framework' [1]
• Identify and describe the impact of the physical, emotional and social environment on parenting capacity, child growth and development
• Identify and describe evidence-based assessment tools designed for assessment of the physical, emotional and social home environment on child and family health
• Identify the 'developmental assets for Early Childhood' as outlined by the Search Institute [2] as they relate to family life within the home environment

Mary Malone is the programme leader for Specialist Community Public Health Nursing at King’s College London. She has a background in in general nursing, midwifery and health visiting. Mary’s professional interests include family health, health information seeking, child growth and health inequalities. Her PhD focused on differences in families’ use of the Internet for health information. Mary is a chapter author and module editor for this project.
