Description

This session identifies the metabolic consequences of diabetes mellitus which impact on surgical practice, and how to manage patients with diabetes mellitus peri-operatively.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Define the different types of diabetes
• Identify the complications leading to surgical treatments that may arise from diabetes
• Explain how patients with diabetes should be managed peri-operatively

Clarisa Choh -
Clarisa is currently working at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust in Reading. She has rotated throughout most of England, having completed a variety of jobs, including Plastic Surgery, Burns and Intensive Care, and has had the privilege of treating military casualties from the war. She is currently completing her ST3 General Surgery rotation in the Wessex region which she began in October 2010.


Hugh Simpson -
Hugh is a Consultant Physician at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. He has a special interest in endocrinology and was previously a Program Director for medicine, Oxford deanery.
