Description

This session covers the ultrasound (US) detection and diagnosis of vitreo-retinal lesions including retinal tears, retinal detachment, posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) and choroidal detachment. The role of US in the evaluation of blunt ocular trauma and detection of intra-ocular foreign body (IOFB) will also be covered.

Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Explain the differences between retinal detachment, PVD and choroidal detachment
• Describe how US is used in the detection of retinal tears
• Outline the role of US in the evaluation of blunt ocular trauma and detection of IOFB

Mr Atta worked as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Grampian NHS Trust, Scotland and was an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen. He previously took training positions in Guys’ Hospital, London, Glasgow NHS Trust, Scotland and the West Midlands NHS Trust, England.

Mr Atta has experience in the surgical, medical and laser treatment of eye disorders with subspecialty interest in vitreo-retinal surgery and ophthalmic ultrasound.

In 1987 He was awarded the Keeler’s Trust for Ophthalmology Grant, to support Fellowship in Ophthalmic Ultrasound at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami-Florida.

In 2006 he received research grant, from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, to support study on "ultrasound biomicroscopic examination of stability of intra-ocular lens implants".

He is a member of the International Society of Ophthalmic Ultrasound (SIDUO). In September 2010 he organised and chaired the XXIII international SIDUO Ultrasound Congress in Edinburgh.

Mr Atta is a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists UK, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and has been involved in the Royal Colleges’ training and examination committees.

He is the author of the book: Ophthalmic Ultrasound-a practical Guide, Butterworth Heinmann (ISBN: 0443047731) and a Chapter in two Books: 1- ‘Techniques and Application of Diagnostic Ultrasound’. In Current Ophthalmic Surgery. D Easty (Ed), Bailliere Tindall (ISBN: 0702013633) and 2- 'Ocular Echography' in Multimodal Retinal Imaging. A Chopdar & T Aung (Eds), JP Medical Ltd (ISBN: 978-1-907816-60-4).

He is the author of peer reviewed scientific publications in ophthalmic ultrasound and Vitreo-retinal surgery and is the invited speaker to national and international congresses and meetings.
