This session defines surgical site infections (SSIs) and explains the principles of antibiotic prophylaxis, including risks and benefits. It outlines alternatives available for those patients with penicillin allergy.

Shabnam Iyer -
Shabnam Iyer is a Consultant Microbiologist at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. Her primary interest is in surgical site infections, particularly prosthesis-related infection.

Ridzuan Farouk -
Ridzuan Farouk is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading. He trained in Glasgow and Edinburgh, followed by colorectal fellowships at the University of Hull and the Mayo Clinic, USA. Riz has been an MRCS examiner since 1999.
