Description

Urinary Tract Infections: Clearing up a Cloudy Topic, is a free course designed to help veterinary team members become acquainted with the causes of urinary tract infections, implement efficient diagnostic protocols and review treatment options to aid in the management of the disease. Every practice strives to provide the best care for their patients and, through proper diagnostics, patients with urinary tract infections can receive timely medical management with successful resolution of the infection and cessation of symptoms.

Objectives

On completion of this course the learner will be able to:
1. Identify and describe the function of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra
2. Define and differentiate pyelonephritis, cystitis and urethritis
3. Recognize factors that may predispose dogs and cats to urinary tract infections
4. Evaluate clinical symptoms associated with a UTI
5. Describe host defenses that defend the body against UTIs
6. Recognize causative agents of bacterial UTIs in dogs and cats
7. Describe potential contamination factors associated with urine sample collection
8. Describe the physical characteristics of a urine sample and determine the urine specific gravity
9. Describe limitations associated with reagent strips
10. Describe the steps used to complete a urine sediment analysis and assess for the presence of bacteria, epithelial cells, WBCs, RBCs and fat droplets
11. Compare and contrast numbers and types of bacteria associated with an active UTI versus contamination correlated with various urine collection methods
12. Describe the importance of a urine culture, and interpret results
13. Select traditional therapies used to treat UTIs
14. Evaluate, compare and contrast appropriate diagnostic evaluation tools and treatment protocols for recurrent UTIs
15. Describe adjunctive management aimed at preventing adhesion of bacteria to the urinary tract, and explain how this facilitates their removal
