It has long been accepted by the design community that 70 percent of the cost of a product is locked in during the earliest stages of design. As a result, the number one question that engineering management should be asking is, “Can the costs that make up that 70 percent be lowered through better upfront efforts, keeping only what is essential in the product to accomplish the functionality
desired by the customer?” This is where DFMA seeks to make its mark on a product’s design and profitability. This presentation will focus on the importance of a well developed, early costing capability; emphasize the design team’s critical role in business profitability; and summarize why, ultimately, it’s the design of the product and its underlying simplicity that drive everything else we do in the manufacturing organization.

Students will learn the essence of applying DFMA to product design.
