ADHD is the most common learning and behavioral disorder in childhood. While medical and educational professionals are more aware of the unique characteristics of children and teens with both the hyperactive and inattentive forms of the disorder, there is still a lack of understanding of the disorder and the long term implications. Without early identification and proper treatment, ADHD can have serious long term consequences including school failure, depression, conduct disorder, failed relationships, and substance abuse. This does not have to happen. When professionals can appropriately diagnose and treat ADHD, life can be less stressful for everyone. While medication is sometimes needed, this seminar will provide you with insight, information, and numerous non-medication strategies to develop a multimodal treatment approach for each person. You will also learn how to discern comorbidities and help to prevent misdiagnosis.

The participant will be able to:
• View research on the ADHD brain.
• Describe the symptoms and behaviors of the ADHD child and adolescent identified in the DSM 5.
• Understanding the developmental delay in executive functioning skills that accompanies ADHD.
• Identify the positive aspects of ADHD.
• Describe effective non-medication treatments for ADHD and identify when medication is needed.
• Recognize other disorders that often co-exist with ADHD.
