Description

This three-part lecture will explain how the FDCA protects the public health, identifies the categories of drug products approved for commercial distribution and how drugs are different from the other items regulated by the FDCA. The second and third lectures will cover adulteration and misbranding of drugs as well as the drug approval process and advertising regulations.

Objectives

Upon completion of the webinars, pharmacists should be able to:
Describe how the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FDCA) protects the public health;
Describe major amendments to the FDCA and the reasons for them;
Identify the categories of drug products approved for commercial distribution;
Identify conditions under which a drug product becomes adulterated;
Identify commercial container labeling requirements for legend and for non-legend drug products;
Outline and describe the steps in the new drug application process, including “Phase IV” monitoring; and
Discuss requirements for manufacturer advertising of prescription drugs to professionals and consumers.

David A. Mott, PhD, MS, RPh Professor of Pharmacy School of Pharmacy, University of Wisconsin-Madison David Mott received his BS (1988) in pharmacy, and his MS (1992) and PhD (1995) in pharmacy administration, all from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His minor fields of study for his PhD degree were economics and public policy analysis. Dr. Mott practiced pharmacy in community settings. Before joining the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy faculty in 1998, Dr. Mott was on the faculty at the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. He was named Teacher of the Year in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2006 by first year doctor of pharmacy students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has published widely in pharmacy journals and outside of pharmacy. He currently teaches courses in the health care system, pharmacy economics, and pharmacy service, program and policy evaluation research methods.
