Description

The Patient Safety Act of 2005 is now in effect and requires all Health Care Providers to document all adverse events through a quality improvement program. Pharmacies must understand these new requirements, the legal protection the law provides when reporting adverse events and the consequences of not implementing or not reporting adverse events. When adverse events are reported to a Patient Safety Organization, all documentation is considered "Privileged" through the legal protection of the Act and the documentation cannot be obtained through a subpoena.

Objectives

Objectives
At the completion of this activity, pharmacists and technicians will be able to:
1. Recognize how the new Patient Safety Act impacts pharmacy operations
2. Explain the types of Adverse Events that occur within a pharmacy operation
3. Describe when an Adverse Event is a HIPAA Compliance Breach
4. Explain what is a Patient Safety Organization (PSO)
