Description

This activity will introduce pharmacists to evidence-based approaches for managing stress. Attendees will practice mind-body skills known to short-circuit the “fright, fight, or flight” response to stressful situations. Attendees also will learn cognitive practices for changing their thinking about potentially stressful situations. Attendees will leave with a personal toolkit of strategies for controlling the amount of stress they experience both in and out of the workplace.

Objectives

Objectives
At the completion of this activity, the pharmacists and technicians will be able to:
1. Identify common sources of stress for pharmacy professionals and possible effects on physical health, mood, and behavior.
2. Contrast the body's stress response and relaxation response.
3. Demonstrate practices for eliciting the relaxation response, including proper breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness meditation.
4. Use simple cognitive techniques to transform stressful thoughts.
5. Formulate a personal list of "in-the-moment" strategies that can be employed when stressful situations arise in pharmacy practice.
