Description

Hemophilia may lead to a variety of complications including bleeding into joint spaces, destruction of joints, intracranial hemorrhages, gastrointestinal bleeding, maturational delays and death. Advances in purification and molecular biotechnology over the past 40 years have resulted in significantly improved treatments and increased life expectancy in patients with hemophilia. As a result, effective disease management requires life-long integrated care which has become complex and multifaceted involving prophylaxis, on-demand treatment of bleeding episodes, and lifestyle interventions. This archived symposium reviews the evolving science behind the treatment of patients with hemophilia, compares conventional treatments with recent advances, and reviews the role of specialty pharmacists in managing patients with hemophilia through drug utilization management, patient education, addressing social and lifestyle needs, and promoting treatment adherence. Current pharmacoeconomic data are also reviewed to allow specialty pharmacists to optimize treatment while addressing the often considerable financial burden to the patient and their families.
