It is common practice for pharmacies to use Potency Over Time (POT) testing to determine the BUD. The pharmacist/technician can now understand the difference between POT and true Stability Testing to be able to assign the appropriate BUD to compounded preparations in the pharmacy.

Objectives

Objectives

1. Define the components of potency testing and stability testing
2. Explain the methodology used in conducting potency/stability testing for a compounded preparation
3. Apply information gained from a stability test to determine an appropriate beyond-use-date
4. Compare and contrast Potency Over Time (POT) test vs Stability Test

At this point he intended to retire (again) but received a call from Humco Compounding. When they asked what he has been up to lately he said, “Nothing, and that doesn’t start until 11 AM.” But, he couldn’t resist the challenge to bring his compounding expertise to Humco as their only staff pharmacist. He is the proud recipient of the Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award (1997), the Distinguished Coloradan (1999) and the Arthur C. Hassan Outstanding Pharmacist of the Year (2001). He is a member of NCPA, IACP, PCCA, Colorado Pharmacist Society, ASHP and ACA.
