Description

The purpose of this session is to enable pharmacists to use current evidence to respond to common questions patients may have on herpes zoster infection. This interactive session will review the most up-to-date evidence on herpes zoster infection using patient case scenarios. After the session, pharmacists will be able to counsel patients with herpes zoster in a more comprehensive and specific way so that these patients may be able to monitor themselves more closely for medication effectiveness and adverse effects.

Objectives

Objectives
At the completion of this activity, pharmacists will be able to:
1.Use the most up-to-date evidence to answer common questions patients may have about herpes zoster infection.
2.Specify the effectiveness of antiviral and adjunct treatment for herpes zoster.
3.Recommend herpes zoster vaccine to appropriate patients.

At the completion of this activity, technicians will be able to:
1.Describe signs and symptoms of herpes zoster.
2.List treatment options and medications prescribed for herpes zoster.

Jason Cota, PharmD, MS, BCPS

Jason Cota is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy and currently serves as the infectious diseases clinical pharmacist at Brooke Army Medical Center. After receiving his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Texas at Austin, he completed a 2- year pharmacotherapy residency and Master of Science degree at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio.
