Description

Chancroid is a rare sexually transmitted disorder that often presents with painful necrotizing ulcers in the genital area. Chancroid is caused by the gram-negative anaerobe Haemophilus ducreyi and is almost always accompanied by generalized lymphadenopathy. This organism releases a potent cytotoxin, which causes both lymphadenopathy and painful ulcers. Often patients will present with a history of either single or multiple genital ulcers that erupted after a sexual encounter. In women, the lesions may be located on the vagina, vulva and labia; in men, the lesions may occur on the glans penis. Treatment includes use of antibiotics.
