Description

Obesity has reached epidemic levels in North America. It is estimated that 50% of adults and 20% of children in America are obese, and nearly 250,000 people die each year from obesity-related complications. This epidemic has placed an enormous burden on our healthcare system, and has untold social and personal ramifications. In the last two decades, there’s been a resurgence in drug development by pharmaceutical companies to combat obesity. Several effective drugs have been developed, but they also have been associated with troubling adverse effects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the weight-loss drugs orlistat, phentermine, Qsymia and lorcaserin. It is believed that more than 30% of Americans are now eligible for short-term drug treatment for weight loss.
