Description

Electroconvulsive therapy has been perceived as a horrible treatment and surrounded by myths — most of which have arisen due to ignorance about the procedure. Today, the American Psychiatric Association has established strict guidelines for ECT administration. The process is regulated, well controlled and performed after thoroughly assessing the patient. ECT is used much less often today, partly because of the availability of potent and more convenient antidepressants, as well as progress in the field of psychotherapy. Under the APA’s recommended “informed consent” protocol, permission to administer ECT is meticulously reviewed and each case is individually analyzed.
