Description

Pinworm, also known as Enterobius vermicularis , is a common parasitic infection in each continent and certainly the most common helminthic infection in North America. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that pinworm infestation is nearly twice as common as head lice. Estimates indicate that pinworm infestation may be as high as 12% in some parts of the United States. The most common symptom of pinworm infection is an intense itch or sharp prickling pain in the anal area. A variety of antihelminthic drugs are effective against pinworms. However, once drug therapy is discontinued, reinfection is common. Most patients need additional drug treatment for complete cure. Also, because young pinworms are resistant to drugs, additional treatment is required as the worms mature.
